What is the difference between a commissioner of oaths and a notary public in Ontario?

A commissioner of oaths can administer oaths and take affidavits and declarations for use within Ontario. A notary public can do all of that and also certify true copies, witness signatures, and notarize documents intended for use outside Ontario or abroad. Minute Notary acts in both capacities.

Which documents can be completed online in Ontario?

Eligible affidavits, statutory declarations, and selected sworn Ontario, IRCC, and court forms can be commissioned online under Ontario Regulation 431/20. Travel consent letters prepared as statutory declarations are also online-eligible. Certified true copies, wills, powers of attorney, and documents requiring wet-ink originals must be completed in person.

Does each additional signer cost extra?

Yes. The first signer is included in the flat rate, and each additional person who must sign is charged $24.95 per additional signer, plus HST, however many documents they sign.

What identification do I need for a notary appointment in Ontario?

You must bring valid, government-issued photo identification such as a passport, an Ontario driver's licence, or an Ontario photo card. Bring the original documents you need notarized along with any supporting paperwork the receiving organization has requested.

How much does a notary cost in Ottawa?

Our pricing is flat: $24.95 for the first stamp or seal and $24.95 for each additional stamp, plus HST. The same rate applies to most services, with no rush fees when you book ahead and no document surcharges. Wills and powers of attorney are signed in person and priced as a bundle: $115 for one document, $200 for any two, and $240 for a will plus both powers of attorney.
