Overview

A look at moneymatter.app

MoneyMatter is an open-source personal finance application that helps users track expenses, manage budgets, and monitor investments. It offers flexible deployment options: users can self-host it for free using Docker on their own server, or use the cloud version starting from $2.50 per month billed yearly.

The app supports bank connections through LunchFlow, SimpleFIN, and Monobank, covering thousands of banks in 30+ countries. Users can also import their financial history from other apps like YNAB, Wallet by BudgetBakers, and Microsoft Money, or via CSV and OFX files. Features include automatic transaction categorization powered by AI, multi-currency support with automatic exchange rates, family sharing with per-account access control, and comprehensive reporting tools.

MoneyMatter includes an AI assistant that can answer complex financial questions and automate analyses. It supports integration with Claude, ChatGPT, and other MCP-compatible AI tools through scoped OAuth permissions. All financial data is encrypted with AES-256-GCM, and users retain full ownership of their information. The application is built on open-source code under the AGPL-3.0 license.

Q&A

Is my data secure?
Browser communication is over HTTPS. Bank credentials and AI keys are encrypted with AES-256-GCM. The company does not sell or share data, and Stripe handles payments so card details are never seen. There are no Google or Facebook trackers. Crash detection and user behavior analytics help ship fixes quickly. All code is auditable on GitHub, and self-hosting keeps data on your own server.
Which banks are supported?
Thousands of banks in 30+ countries are supported. LunchFlow and SimpleFIN connect banks across the US, Canada and Europe. Monobank covers Ukraine. Users open an account with the provider and MoneyMatter syncs from it. Bank sync comes with the Plus plan. If your bank is missing, you can import CSV, OFX or statement files.
What happens after the 40-day trial?
Users start without a card so MoneyMatter cannot charge them when the trial ends. If they skip the subscription, their account turns read-only and they can still sign in, view and export their data, or delete the account. Nothing is deleted automatically.
Can I move between cloud and self-hosted?
Yes, both ways. Users can export a backup on one and restore it on the other. Backup export works during the trial, so you can try the cloud first and move to your own server later with all your data.
Can I bring my data from another app?
Yes. MoneyMatter imports directly from YNAB, Wallet by BudgetBakers and Microsoft Money. For other apps, use CSV, OFX or bank statement import, with AI-assisted parsing for messy files.
